The main function of that oil is to keep the clutch cool, and lubricate the primary chain. Capacity means starting from a dry state-when the primary is totally disassembled. If you are just changing fluid, pour 1qt in and shine a light in the derby and insure the fluid is covering the Bottom of the clutch basket. My primary oil level increases as my oil level decreases over time. I first noticed this when I drained 3x as much primary oil out of there than should have been (about 3 quarts or more of used/black fluid). When you simply drain the primary without removing the outer cover, 3-4 oz. of oil remains in the primary case. If you remove the outer cover for some reason, you might then use a full quart. The manual may say 4 quarts but don't just blindly dump in 4 quarts. Pour in 3-3.5 quarts then start it and let it run for a couple of minutes looking for leaks and such.
